A recent study by the University of Cape Town’s Centre for Pharmacy Medicine (CPM) and National Institute of Health (NIH) has shown that people who use Nexium (esomeprazole) are not at risk of developing heart attacks or strokes.
The study, published in theNew England Journal of Medicine(NIMJ) shows that those who take Nexium for the first time are not at risk of developing a heart attack or stroke. However, those who have used Nexium for a long time were also at a lower risk of developing heart failure, the researchers wrote.
“This highlights the need for additional studies to determine the long-term risk,” Dr. Michael S. Reilley, director of the CPM, told the newspaper. “This study suggests that these patients may be at greater risk of developing heart failure as a consequence of taking Nexium for a longer time.”
Nexium is one of the most widely prescribed proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), also known as peptic ulcer disease. PPIs are used for treating the symptoms of acid reflux, which include acid reflux and heartburn.
Nexium was first approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1997 for the treatment of acid reflux. It is now the only PPI approved to treat GERD.
The FDA approved Nexium in 2009 for the treatment of GERD. The drug works by blocking acid production in the stomach and esophagus. In patients with severe GERD, Nexium is often used to reduce acid production and prevent the acid from being refluxed out of the esophagus. The drug is available in many strengths and is used only when directed by a gastroenterologist.
The CPM and NIH conducted a study looking at the effects of Nexium on the safety of esomeprazole, an oral anti-emetic medication used to treat acid reflux. The researchers looked at all patients with an esomeprazole dose of 50 mg, taken as needed once a day. They looked at their medical records to determine if Nexium was associated with an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and death.
A total of 4,934 people were screened, of which 2,078 (9.4%) developed heart attacks or strokes. Of those, 2,078 (9.4%) developed heart failure.
A total of 653 people who were also taking Nexium were followed up for another 4,086 cases of heart failure. Nearly 2,000 people who took Nexium for a longer time, in particular those who had taken Nexium for years or longer, were more likely to develop heart failure. Of the 4,086 people, 2,078 developed heart failure.
The researchers noted that the study did not find a link between the use of Nexium and an increased risk of heart failure. They added that the data from the study should be interpreted with caution and that patients with a history of heart failure should be monitored closely for the occurrence of any complications.
“While we do believe that the increased risk of heart failure in patients taking Nexium is due to reduced acid production, the data does not support that the risk is increased in those taking the drug,” Reilley said.
In addition to the CPM and NIH, the researchers also wrote that the results should be interpreted with caution and that patients should be monitored closely for any adverse effects. The study did not show a link between Nexium and a heart attack or stroke.
Nexium is now available in all over the world, including the United States. The CPM has been in use for over 25 years and the NIH has been in use since 2009. Both CPM and NIMJ found that people who used Nexium for the first time were at higher risk of developing a heart attack or stroke than people who were not taking it.
Reilley told the newspaper.
The authors of the CPM’s paper also called for additional studies to determine the long-term risk, the paper added.They also said that the results should be interpreted with caution and that patients should be monitored closely for any complications.
